Is There a Cure for Pancreatitis?

Whether or not your pancreatitis can be permanently cured depends largely upon what causes it — and there are many causes. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas; it may be chronic (ongoing) or acute (sudden onset). Multiple occurrences of acute pancreatitis can result in chronic pancreatitis, so it is important to engage in healthy choices to keep pancreatitis from returning.

If your pancreatitis is the result of alcoholism or gallbladder stones, it may be possible to get rid of your pancreatitis virtually altogether. If you quit drinking completely, your doctor surgically removes your gallbladder (cholecystectomy), or the underlying cause of pancreatitis is completely dealt with, it is possible your pancreatitis may not return.

In other instances, such as hereditary pancreatitis, which is thought to be the result of a genetic mutation, you may have to maintain a careful diet and pay close attention to your pancreas for many years. If you suspect you have pancreatitis, go to the hospital for treatment and talk to your doctor about the underlying cause to find out what your options are.
